About the congress

The 14th International Kant Congress will be organized and hosted by the University of Bonn and the Kant Society (Germany). In celebration of the 300th anniversary of Kant’s birth, and in view of the political developments of our time, the theme of the congress will be “Kant’s Project of Enlightenment”. In 2024, the city of Bonn will also be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the German Constitution, which was enacted into law in Bonn on May 23, 1949, as the Grundgesetz of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Enlightenment emphasized the moral autonomy of the individual and the inalienable political rights of all human beings. Its aim was to overcome deeply engrained prejudices in religion, the state, and society and to defend the principles of rational criticism and emancipation, all while advocating a scientific orientation to the world. The ideas of the Enlightenment are understood to be universal: All human beings are to be considered equal, regardless of gender, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, or sexual orientation. Kant remains one of the most important representatives of the European Enlightenment and one of its central contributors.

Call for papers

The call for papers will run from May 1, 2022 to February 28, 2023. Please submit a full paper of up to 20,000 characters (including spaces, footnotes, and references) and an abstract of approximately 1,000 characters (including spaces, in English). Papers may be written in either one of the congress languages (English, French, Spanish or German) and should relate to one of the 20 sections listed above. Please indicate clearly which section(s) your paper falls under. Contributions will be subject to anonymous peer review. To ensure objectivity, contributions must not contain references to the author’s previous work or any elements that could reveal the author’s identity. Contributions must be submitted as a PDF file.

The selected papers will be allocated a time slot of 30 minutes, including Q&A (presentation: 20 minutes; Q&A: 10 minutes). Authors will be notified of the outcome of the review by July 31, 2023.

Con-Textos Kantianos – international journal of philosophy prepara uma edição especial relativa à teoria estética de Kant.

Embora reconhecida como tendo desempenhado um papel capital na emergência da estética como disciplina, ao longo dos dois últimos séculos a teoria estética de Kant foi perdendo destaque nos debates mais populares da estética e da filosofia da arte.As razões são inúmeras. Entre elas, certamente uma alegada inadequabilidade da teoria de Kant, insistentemente conotada com formalismos estéticos, à intensificação do comprometimento moral e político da prática artística, nomeadamente ao longo do século xx.Dos anos 70 até ao virar do milénio o interesse na estética de Kant reacendeu-se, com trabalhos exaustivos como os de Guyer 1979 ou Allison 2001, entre outros; mas um tal labor teve um efeito muito maior no interior dos estudos kantianos do que no quadro geral da estética e da filosofia da arte – aí, a teoria de Kant continuou a ser mencionada principalmente como mero momento de uma história que já muito dele se distanciou.E, no entanto, questões como a da normatividade estética ou do eventual lugar das considerações éticas e políticas na apreciação estética continuam por resolver.No que diz respeito à primeira, valerá a pena repensar a proposta kantiana de um juízo que é subjectivo e ao mesmo tempo se anuncia como universalmente válido, que se baseia num sentimento de prazer e reivindica o assentimento de qualquer um – vejam-se, nesse âmbito, para além dos já referidos estudos de Guyer 1979 ou Allison 2001, mais recentemente, os de Chignell 2007, Ginsborg 2015, Feloj 2018 ou Zangwill 2019, entre inúmeros outros –, e, nesse sentido, reanalisar noções como as de universalidade subjectiva, necessidade exemplar, sentido comum ou voz universal. No que concerne ao lugar das considerações éticas e políticas na apreciação estética, poderá constituir uma mais valia retomar a proposta de Kant enquanto capaz de conceber um tipo de apreciação que, sem deixar de ser estética, se mostra receptiva à contemplação de questões éticas e políticas – veja-se, nesse contexto, a discussão relativa à beleza aderente empreendida nos trabalhos de Schaper 1979 e Stecker 1987 ou, mais recentemente, nos de Mallaband 2002 ou Zuckert 2007. É significativo acrescentar, a propósito, que qualquer uma das questões referidas poderá ser relacionada com a conexão entre beleza e moralidade, belo e moralmente bom, estético e ético, sugerida por Kant. Vemo-lo, no que concerne à normatividade estética, por exemplo nos trabalhos de Elliott 1968, Crawford 1974, Rogerson 1982 ou Savile 1987; e vemo-lo, no que respeita ao lugar das considerações éticas e políticas na apreciação estética, nos trabalhos de Scarre 1981 ou Kalar 2006, entre outros.

As duas questões mencionadas não esgotam, ainda assim, os modos como a teoria de Kant poderá revelar-se relevante para as discussões correntes dos âmbitos da estética e da filosofia da arte. Fará sentido, hoje, colhidos os frutos do ataque de Dickie 1964 às teorias da atitude estética, perguntar como poderão as considerações de Kant acerca de uma contemplação serena e tranquila e de um prazer desinteressado ajudar-nos a pensar versões recentes das referidas teorias, como a de Fenner 1996. Ademais, a teoria de Kant poderá igualmente mostrar-se pertinente para pensarmos tópicos que à primeira vista se afiguram extrínsecos aos âmbitos da estética e da filosofia da arte, entre eles o tópico geral da relação do juízo de gosto com o conhecimento. Deverão ser tidos em conta, neste contexto, os estudos que têm vindo a ser desenvolvidos por autores como Ginsborg 1990, Longuenesse 1998 ou Geiger 2010, por exemplo.Estas e outras questões – concernentes a problemas lançados por Kant e ainda não resolvidos e a discussões correntes da estética e da filosofia da arte para as quais a teoria de Kant poderá ser relevante – serão abordadas no próximo número de Con-Textos Kantianos – international journal of philosophy.

Con-Textos Kantianos – international journal of philosophy prepares a special issue on Kant’s aesthetic theory.

It is generally acknowledged that Kant’s aesthetic theory played a central role in the emergence of aesthetics as a discipline. However, Kant seems to have lost any relevance during the last two centuries with respect to the most popular debates within aesthetics and philosophy of art.Among the many reasons for this is the alleged inadequacy of Kant’s account, which tended to be represented as a form of aesthetic formalism – a theory that fell out of favour in the 20th Century, due to an increasing emphasis on moral engagement in artistic practices.From the 1970s to the beginning of the new millennium, works by commentators such as Guyer 1979 and Allison 2001, among others, have led to a renewed interest in Kant’s aesthetics. However, such works have had a stronger effect within Kantian studies than in the general sphere of aesthetics and philosophy of art, where Kant’s theory is mentioned merely as a moment in a tradition of thought that has long since moved on.And yet, many of Kant’s questions remain to be answered, including the nature of aesthetic normativity and the place of ethical and political issues within aesthetic appreciation.With respect to the former, it would be worth rethinking Kant’s proposal that a subjective judgment grounded in a feeling of pleasure can be universally valid and demand everyone’s assent – see, besides the abovementioned Guyer 1979 and Allison 2001, more recently, Chignell 2007, Ginsborg 2015, Feloj 2018 or Zangwill 2019, among many others. There remains important work to do in analysing related notions such as subjective universality, exemplary necessity, common sense, or universal voice.As for the place of ethical and political issues within aesthetic appreciation, it would be valuable to return to Kant’s notion of a kind of appreciation that, while being aesthetic, welcomes contemplation of ethical and political issues – see, in this context, the discussions of adherent beauty in Schaper 1979, Stecker 1987, or, more recently, Mallaband 2002 or Zuckert 2007.The answers to both questions shed light on the links drawn by Kant between beauty and morality, the beautiful and the morally good, aesthetics and ethics. With regards to aesthetic normativity, these links have been discussed by Elliott 1968, Crawford 1974, Rogerson 1982 and Savile 1987. With respect to the place of ethical and political issues within aesthetic appreciation, see Scarre 1981 or Kalar 2006, among others.There are many further ways in which Kant’s theory is relevant to current debates about aesthetics and philosophy of art. In particular, Kant’s account of calm contemplation and disinterested pleasure is a rich resource for evaluating and expanding upon the more recent responses to Dickie 1964’s attack on theories of the aesthetic attitude, such as the response given by Fenner 1996. Furthermore, we have much to learn from the broad scope of Kant’s theory, which addresses issues that at first glance look external to the ambits of aesthetics and philosophy of art. At a very general level, Kant raises important questions about the relation between judgments of taste and cognition. In this context, Ginsborg 1990, Longuenesse 1998 or Geiger 2010, among others, should be considered.To sum up, this special issue will address problems raised by Kant which are still to be solved, and contribute to current debates in aesthetics and philosophy of art to which Kant’s theory is relevant.

Kant: Concepts, Imagination, and Aesthetic Appreciation

– Conference, NOVA University of Lisbon, 16-17 April 2020 –

Conference Theme: Kant’s requirements for a judgment to become a judgment of taste are often viewed as especially limiting. He has been taken to rule out almost any judgment of beauty that is grounded on concepts or aimed at them. And yet, a number of readings of the Critique of the Power of Judgment suggest that Kant’s aesthetic theory is particularly inclusive. From flowers to representational paintings, and from mathematical demonstrations to moral statements – anything, in principle, can become an object of aesthetic appreciation. A common denominator of such readings of the third Critique is reference to the freedom of imagination: as long as imagination acts freely and moves in a free play, then aesthetic appreciation is possible. This is despite the involvement of concepts – or indeed, some commentators even claim that this is due to the participation of concepts. It is the main aim of this conference to consider arguments in favor and against the possibility of aesthetic appreciation which takes concepts into account. We welcome contributions on the nature and contemporary relevance of Kant’s philosophy – in particular, his aesthetic theory, but also his theory of cognition and his moral and political philosophy.

Submission of Abstracts: Titles and abstracts in English (max. 750 words), prepared for blind review, must be emailed to joaolemos@fcsh.unl.pt or rsr35@cam.ac.uk by 31 January 2020. A second document with a short biographical note in English (max. 250 words) must be sent in the same email. Notices of acceptance will be sent out by 15 February 2020.

Language: If you wish to give a talk in a language other than English, please note that an English version of the paper must be provided upon acceptance, to be projected during your presentation.

Cost: There are no fees for participating in this conference. No funding is available for flights and accommodation, but the organisers can recommend accommodation on request.

CALL FOR PAPERS: RE-ENCOUNTER WITH KANT – TRADITION AND CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES

Many traditions of thinking have established a dialogue between the different aspects of Kant’s philosophy. In fact, many important contemporary trends of thought, such as phenomenology, have held a continuous reference to critical Kantian thinking. The critical review or reappropiation of some essential theses of the theorethical and practical philosophy of Kant have had a substantive presence in the building of modern and contemporary philosophy. For their part, different fields like Law, Ethics, Aesthetics, or some branches of science, have mantained Kant in a privileged position in discussions to the present day.

The aim of the international conference «Re-encounter with Kant – Tradition and contemporary approaches» is to create a space for reflection on and discussion of the philosopher of Königsberg. This will allow a thorough enquiry into his standing, his thinking and his significance today. Supported by Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Universidad Pontificia Comillas (UPC) & Universidad Nacional a Distancia (UNED), it takes place from 17th to 20th March of 2020 in Madrid, specifically in the Philosophy Department of UCM and Alberto Aguilera campus of UPC.

For this conference, we invite all interested researchers to submit abstracts and to contribute their proposals for this meeting. The text in Word format should have a heading and should not exceed 500 words. Futhermore, the text ought to explain the thematic axis in which the following topics could be contextualized:

1. Kantian aetas and Neo-Kantianism.
2. The reception of  Kantian philosophy in phenomenology.
3. The significance of kantianism in contemporary political philosophy, ethics and law.
4. Epistemology and theory of science in Kant.
5. Kant and contemporary aesthetic.
6. Metaphysics and knowledge in Kant.

The submission should include a double-blind version with any identification details removed. Moreover a short CV of no more than 300 words needs to be added containing the author’s position and affiliation, as well as contact information. The submission deadline is 30th December and it has to be sended before that date to: reencuentroconkant@gmail.com  

The acceptance (or not) will be communicated before January 10th. The length for presentations is 20 minutes and 10 minutes after for discussion. The official languages of the Conference are Spanish, English and German.

Muchas tradiciones de pensamiento han establecido un diálogo con diferentes aspectos de la filosofía kantiana. Corrientes contemporáneas de pensamiento muy significativas como la fenomenología han mantenido una referencia ininterrumpida al pensamiento crítico kantiano. La relectura o reapropiación crítica de alguna de las tesis fundamentales de la filosofía teórica y práctica de Kant han estado muy presentes en la formación de la filosofía moderna y contemporánea. Por su parte, disciplinas diferentes como el derecho, la moral, la estética o algunas ramas de la ciencia han continuado en nuestros días haciendo de las posiciones kantianas uno de sus objetos más inmediatos de interlocución.

El congreso «Reencuentro con Kant – Tradición y perspectivas contemporáneas» tiene como objetivo construir un espacio de reflexión y discusión en torno al sabio de Königsberg, que propicie una indagación rigurosa en torno a su figura, pensamiento y proyección en la contemporaneidad. Auspiciado por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), la Universidad Pontificia Comillas (UPC) y la Universidad Nacional a Distancia (UNED), se celebrará entre el 17 y el 20 de marzo de 2020 en Madrid en la Facultad de Filosofía de la UCM y el campus de Alberto Aguilera de la UPC.

En el marco del congreso, se hace un llamamiento a la recepción de propuestas para todos los investigadores interesados en contribuir con una propuesta al Congreso Reencuentro con Kant: tradición y perspectivas contemporáneas. El texto deberá ir encabezado con un título, así como un resumen que no exceda las 500 palabras. Del mismo modo, deberá explicitarse el eje temático en el que podría contextualizarse la temática de entre los siguientes propuestos:

1. Aetas kantiana y neokantismo
2. La recepción de la filosofía kantiana en la fenomenología

Bedeutsame zeitgenössische Geistesströmungen, wie die Phänomenologie, beziehen sich fortlaufend auf das kritische Denken Kants. Neue Lesarten und die kritische Wiederaneignung von Grundsätzen der theoretischen und praktischen Philosophie Kants sind ausschlaggebend für die Entwicklung der modernen und zeitgenössischen Philosophie. In Recht, Moral, Ästhetik und Wissenschaft sind die Thesen Kants, nach wie vor, lebhaft im Gespräch.

The conference aims at stimulating fruitful exchanges between established scholars, young researchers, and PhD students. Presentation time will be 25 minutes + 20 minutes for discussion.

VI Congresso da Sociedade Kant Brasileira

Chamada para apresentação de trabalho – comunicações e painéis

Caras kantianas, caros kantianos,

O Congresso da Sociedade Kant Brasileira, realizado periodicamente a cada cinco anos, é um evento tradicional no país que reúne desde 1994 a comunidade de pesquisadoras e pesquisadores da obra de Immanuel Kant e da herança do pensamento kantiano no Brasil. É com muito prazer que anunciamos a sexta edição do evento que terá como tema “As pretensões da razão” e será realizado entre os dias 11 e 14 de junho de 2018, no Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), em Campinas-SP.

O VI Congresso da SKB contará com os seguintes convidados já confirmados para as conferências plenárias: Guido Antônio de Almeida (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), Zelijko Loparic (Universidade Estadual de Campinas), Ricardo Ribeiro Terra (Universidade de São Paulo), Patricia Kitcher (Columbia University), Pauline Kleingeld (University of Groningen), Bernd Dörflinger (Universität Trier) e Pablo Muchnik (Emerson College). Além das conferências plenárias, estão previstas também conferências de professoras e professores, cujos trabalhos são referência em diversas áreas da pesquisa em Kant, assim como debates sobre livros e traduções recentemente lançados.

O congresso também contará com mesas de comunicação e painéis para a apresentação de trabalhos, que serão selecionados pela comissão organizadora do congresso. As mesas de comunicação serão compostas por docentes e pós-doutorandas(os), que terão 25 minutos para apresentação de trabalho e 20 minutos para discussão. Os painéis para apresentação de pesquisa serão compostos por estudantes de mestrado e doutorado, com apresentações de 30 minutos, divididos em 15 minutos de exposição e 15 minutos de debate. Neste caso, os trabalhos devem ser enviados integralmente com antecedência, pois deverão lidos pelos integrantes do painel e debatidos por um(a) professor(a) ou pós-doutor(a).

Convidamos a todas e todos a submeterem seus trabalhos ao e-mail congressoskb2018@gmail.com de acordo com as seguintes diretrizes:

1. Docentes e pós-doutoras(es) deverão enviar um resumo expandido de até 400 palavras (aproximadamente 1 página), em arquivo anexo, identificado apenas com o título do trabalho.

2. Estudantes de mestrado e doutorado deverão enviar o trabalho completo, com no máximo 8 páginas, fonte 12, espaçamento 1,5, em arquivo anexo, identificado apenas com o título do trabalho.

No corpo do e-mail devem ser apresentados os seguintes dados: Nome, Título do texto, Categoria (docente ou pós-graduando), Titulação máxima, Instituição atual.

Data limite para o envio: 28 de fevereiro de 2018.

Alertamos que, devido às dificuldades de financiamento, não cobriremos as despesas de viagem e hospedagem. Sugerimos que as verbas de custeio sejam obtidas junto às instituições de origem.

Em breve disponibilizaremos os endereços de hotéis e pousadas próximas ao local do Congresso.

III Colóquio Kant da UFU: “As faculdades do ânimo: intuição e objetividade”

O Grupo de Estudo e Pesquisa “Investigações sobre a Filosofia Kantiana e suas Influências (CNPq) convida professores e estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação para apresentarem trabalhos durante este evento que visa destacar as faculdades do ânimo envolvidas na construção da objetividade a partir da intuição.

“Kant e a História Natural”

A revista Estudos Kantianos, editada pelo Departamento de Filosofia da UNESP, convida os autores interessados a submeterem textos para seu próximo número (ref. ao segundo semestre de 2017) a ser organizado em torno do tema “Kant e a História Natural”. Espera-se, com isso, oferecer uma ocasião para que sejam exploradas não apenas as idéias de Kant a respeito dos problemas filosóficos que estão em jogo no estudo dos organismos e da vida, como também a relação de suas teorias com as de outros filósofos e cientistas que, de algum modo, desenvolveram pesquisas nos domínios das disciplinas compreendidas sob o nome geral de História Natural (tais como a fisiologia, a embriologia, a anatomia etc.).

Data limite para submissão: 31.10.2017

Todo material a ser submetido deverá ser enviado em formato Word e por e-mail (contendo o assunto “Estudos Kantianos”) para um dos seguintes endereços: belfragelli@gmail.com ou cpek@marilia.unesp.br.

A revista Estudos Kantianos aceita artigos, traduções e resenhas em português, espanhol, italiano, alemão, francês e inglês. Pedimos que os textos não excedam 30 páginas e sejam redigidos em Times New Roman, tamanho 12 e espaçamento 1,5. Devem, também, conter uma versão do título, do resumo, das palavras-chave e uma breve biografia do autor (máx. 10 linhas) em português ou em inglês.

Lettre circulaire – Appel à communications

Chère Collègue, cher Collègue,

Nous avons le plaisir de vous inviter à prendre part au XIIIe Congrès international de la Société d’Études Kantiennes de Langue Française, qui aura lieu du 13 au 15 septembre 2017 à l’Université Portucalense, Porto (Portugal).

Ce XIIIe Congrès sera consacré à l’examen des figures kantiennes de l’humain et des sciences qui, selon Kant, font de l’humain leur objet fondamental, notamment la géographie, la psychologie et l’anthropologie.

Il s’agira d’étudier et d’interroger à la fois : 1) le sens kantien de l’humain ou de l’huma¬nité (en tant qu’espèce et en tant que « personnalité »), dont l’élucidation convoque l’histoire de la philosophie et de la culture européenne ; 2) la primauté de la signi¬fication « cosmique », cosmopolitique et éthique de l’humain dans le cadre de la philo¬sophie pratique de Kant ; 3) le statut épistémologique de la géographie, de la psycho¬logie et de l’anthropologie en tant que « sciences kantiennes de l’humain » ; 4) l’héri¬tage kantien en ces domaines dans la pensée actuelle.

Les communications auront une durée maximale de 30 minutes, et chaque groupe thématique de communications sera suivi d’une discussion de 30 minutes.

Nous vous remercions de bien vouloir adresser le titre de votre communication, accompagné d’un résumé de cinq à dix lignes jusqu’au 30 avril 2017, soit par voie électronique (seklf2017@gmail.com), soit par voie postale : Paulo Jesus, Universidade Portucalense, Rua Dr. António Bernardino de Almeida, nº 541, 4200-072 Porto, Portugal.

À l’issue du Congrès, une publication des Actes est prévue sous forme d’un ouvrage collectif, après révisions et corrections. En vue de préparer les communications orales ainsi que la future publication des Actes et afin d’harmoniser la présentation du volume, nous demandons à chaque contributeur de bien vouloir donner, pour chaque texte cité de Kant, dans une note de bas de page, la double référence suivante :
1) pour le texte allemand à l’édition de l’Académie de Berlin (volume en chiffres romains, page en chiffres arabes ; ex : AK III, 21),
2) pour la traduction française à l’édition de la Pléiade (Kant, Œuvres philosophiques, Paris, Gallimard, en 3 volumes, 1980-1986 ; volume en chiffres romains, page en chiffres arabes ; ex : OP II, 143), chaque fois que cela est possible. Pour les ouvrages non traduits ou seulement partiellement traduits dans la « Biblio-thèque de la Pléiade », chaque contributeur précisera, outre la référence à l’Académie, la traduction qu’il a choisie.

Prochainement, nous vous annoncerons la création d’une page web avec des renseignements utiles concernant votre voyage et votre séjour à Porto.
